Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
